| Sample Telecommuting Program Checklist for the Alternate Work Space | ||||

The purpose of this sample checklist is to provide a general framework for telecommuting in State agencies. It does not attempt to address the special conditions and needs of all individual agencies. When developing a telecommuting policy, an agency should consult with its legal counsel to determine if the language meets the agencys specific needs. Success of a telecommuting arrangement depends on a realistic assessment of the alternate work space and the ability of the employee to successfully complete his work in this environment. The telecommuter must assess the alternate work space to ensure that the space is adequate, safe, and hazard free. Equipment ___ PC Stand Recommended height for computing surface is 26" high. ___ Desk Recommended height for conventional desk surface is 29" high. ___ Desk Sturdy enough to handle the weight of peripheral equipment (e.g. computers, printers, fax machines, etc.). ___ Chair Recommended height of the top surface of the seat to floor should be 1521". ___ Chair Recommended to provide support to the back and waist. ___ Chair Preferably an adjustable one for height and angle of the backrest. General Environment ___ Space should be adequately ventilated. ___ Space should be reasonably quiet and free of distractions. ___ Aisle, doorways, and corners should be free from obstructions to permit movement. ___ Lighting should be adequate. Electricity/Equipment ___ There should be enough electrical outlets in the alternate work space to support the required equipment. If necessary, consult with an electrician or power utility company on capacity questions. ___ Electrical outlets should be three-pronged (grounded). ___ Computer equipment must be connected to a surge protector. ___ Sufficient air space should be around electrical components. ___ All electrical equipment is free of recognized hazards that would cause physical harm (e.g. frayed wires, bare conductors, loose wires, flexible wires through walls, exposed wires fixed to the ceiling). Safety ___ There is a fire extinguisher in the alternate work space. ___ There is a working smoke detector detectable to the alternate work space. ___ Phone lines, electrical cords, and extension wires are secured underneath desk or along baseboards.
